There is a great deal of conflicting information about carbohydrates. Some diet's recommend low carbohydrates. Some diets recommend no carbohydrates at all, whilst others suggest just eating carbs and nothing else!

It's no wonder that many people are confused and don't know what to do any more. This confusion can lead to a situation worse than before. So is there any simple truth behind all of these conflicting theories and ideas?

Thankfully, the real truth is not as complicated as you might think. First a few facts about carbohydrates, what they are and why they are important.

At last here's a sensible diet...

Firstly, let us make one thing absolutely clear:
    Your Body Needs Carbohydrates!!!

We have heard people say to us that they don't need carbohydrates - saying they "had read this somewhere".

Often they say that the carbs they need can be gotten from the protein they eat! Sounds like there is some confusion on the subject!

Carbohydrates are vital for your body. Without carbs every day you will soon lose energy and could become ill. There is a large difference between a carb-controlled diet and a zero-carb diet.

You must eat some carbs every day for good health. The key is to eat good carbs, not junk carbs.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy to eat the right carbs. This is because most fast foods and snack foods are full of bad carbs.
This is why GoodCarbs™ was created.

Your body needs the right carbs and the specially blended ingredients ensure that you can conveniently get some good carbs at any time.

What are good carbs and what are bad carbs?

Firstly, it will be easier to explain what bad carbs are and then we can go onto good carbs.

Bad carbs can more easily be understood if they are more carefully categorised as:

The reason for this is that there is a difference between each of these categories. In other words some bad carbs are worse than others.

Very Bad Carbs
By far the worse types of carbs are found in this category. Foods such as sugary doughnuts, cakes, biscuits, jams, crisps, chips/french fries and similar foods are all basically very bad carbs.

These all dramatically affect blood sugar levels and throw the body's own natural hormone balance into chaos.

This results in severe insulin level fluctuations and this then leads into the body converting many of these foods into fat and storing them.

Bad Carbs
This category includes foods such as processed white bread, processed white rice, soda drinks, fizzy drinks, and other processed foods which don't at first glance have much sugar in them. (The sugary processed foods would come under the heading "Very Bad Carbs").

One of the reason these are bad is because most of us could easily eat too many of them. Almost all fast foods consist of these types of carbs.

Most processed foods which come in boxes, tins and packets fall into this category. Even so called healthy breakfast cereals come into this category. These have been processed and consist of refined wheat, corn, puffed rice and other cereals etc.

Quite Bad Carbs
It may seem wishy-washy or vague to describe something as "quite bad". Does this mean you should or shouldn't eat these types of carbohydrates?

In simple terms this category covers foods which if eaten in sensible quantities then the harm to our weight and fat content won't be too severe.

The danger though is that these foods are often eaten in quite large quantities and so can help pile the pounds on.

The foods in this category consist of things like, brown bread, brown rice, wholemeal cereals, wheat and all types of pasta.

In the long term, usually it is ok to eat these foods and no harm to ones health or figure will occur. On the whole these types of foods are healthy. This is provided of course that quantities are not excessively large. Sensible portion sizes should be eaten. Eat too much and you will feel bloated, sluggish and feel tired after meals.

In the short-term it is usually best to ensure that you don't eat too many of these types of carbs when you are trying to lose weight. In simple terms don't eat them at every meal and perhaps try to eat them just a few times per week.

All of the above three levels of "bad carbs" tend to raise the blood sugar levels too quickly and this leads to more insulin production in the body. In turn this can eventually lead to more fat retention in the body and unhealthy weight gain.

So does this mean that all carbs are bad? Thankfully the answer is definitely NOT. There are many, many good carbohydrates.

Good Carbohydrates

The majority of vegetables and most fruits can be classed as good carbohydrates. Some cereals such as barley are also excellent carbohydrates. Other excellent sources of carbs are the many seeds and pulses such as numerous types of beans and peas. Further details are given within the other articles and newsletters on this website.

A key fact regarding these "good" carbohydrates is that most of them have a low glycemic index rating. This means the effect on the body's blood sugar cycle will most likely not be very dramatic.

The result of this is that the body gets the energy it needs without gaining excessive weight, which in turn leads to better all round health and longevity etc.
