Black Cohosh
Black
Cohosh has been used for centuries to help with conditions that affected
women's reproductive organs (including menstrual problems, inflammation
of the uterus or ovaries, infertility, threatened miscarriage, and relief
of labour pains).
Studies have shown that black cohosh is a root that has estrogenic properties;
it supplies estrogenic sterols which are the beginnings for steroid hormones
like estrogen and progesterone.
Chasteberry
Chasteberry
is also known as vitex agnus-castus and it is a native of the Mediterranean.
It is a perennial shrub with palm-shaped leaves and small purple flowers
in the summer, which are followed by tiny seeds. The whole plant is strongly
aromatic.
Chasteberry is reputed to help with female hormonal imbalances. It stimulates
the release of hormones, which help stimulate progesterone production.
Studies have shown that Chasteberry may help to restore a regular menstrual
cycle after the cycle has been disrupted. It is often combined with other
regulating herbs such as Wild Yam and Dong Quai.
Wild Yam
Wild
yam is a powerful estrogenic herb used by women around the world. It has
a good anti-inflammatory action and can give relief from menopausal arthritis.
It also has progestogenic properties, and may help to reduce heavy menstrual
bleeding.
It has also been used throughout the ages to help with the pain of childbirth
and many female problems. It is often used for hot flashes, night sweats,
mood changes, and vaginal dryness.
Dong Quai
Dong
quai has been called the "female ginseng" and is excellent as
an all purpose women's herb. It has been used for centuries in China for
regulating the menstrual cycle and easing menstrual pain and cramping.
It can be used to help women regain normal menstrual cycles after taking "the
Pill." It has proven helpful for relieving hot flashes during menopause.
