Lemon
Balm is a native plant of southern Europe but now it's a common garden
herb throughout
the world.
Lemon Balm is a perennial (lasting throughout the year) with oval yellowish green leaves, which have a strong lemon scent when crushed and white flowers in late summer.
Its botanical name is Melissa Officinalis and its also known
as heart's delight. Lemon Balm has been used medicinally since the 17th
century.
Also used extensively in cooking, and is the basis of some cordials.
Many studies have suggested that Lemon Balm helps to reduce excessive
blood pressure. It has a calming and regulating effect on the menstrual
cycle
and is often prescribed for the ease of menstrual cramps and alleviation
of scanty menstruation.
Lemon balm has also been used as a calmative for many digestion difficulties,
including flatulence. Lemon Balm has good anti viral and anti histamine
properties.
Recent studies have also confirmed the age old belief that Lemon Balm
can help mental function and memory. Supplementation with Lemon Balm
has helped many people. See the Guardian newspaper article here for
more information.
It is available in either capsule form, liquid form or in a great tasting
tea. It is recommended that you take either the capsules and the tea
or the liquid and the tea.
In other words, whether you take the capsules or the liquid extract, you should also drink the lemon balm tea. In this way you are maximising the absorption of the herb into your system.
